“Christian (or other) thought about Islam. . .
must resolve to surmount prejudice wherever found
and brace itself to correct error, restrain bitterness,
and dissipate antagonism. It begins simply with the will to understanding, divested of susceptibilities that would compromise its purpose and alerted to its own duty of inward integrity. Foregoing the impulse either to excuse or upbraid, we must seek an openness of soul and sensitivity to all that is deepest in our fellows.”
